A Yorkie Poodle mix, or Yorkie-Poo, is a very popular kind of hybrid dog. These dogs are also known as designer dogs. The Yorkie-Poo is a cross between a Yorkshire Terrier and a Poodle, usually a Toy Poodle. However, the Poodle Parent could be a Miniature Poodle which is also a small breed.
The Yorkshire Terrier and the Poodles (all varieties) are two of the most popular breeds of all dogs in the U.S. and in many other countries, so it’s no surprise that crossing these breeds would produce a dog that is also popular. However, whenever breeds are crossed there is no guarantee which breed the puppies will resemble. Some of the puppies may look more like the Yorkie parent and some may look more like the Poodle parent. Hybrid dogs are not necessarily more healthy than purebred dogs. If the parents have health problems, they can pass the on to their puppies. Many hybrid breeders claim that breeding this way will produce “hybrid vigor” but this is untrue. This is not crossing two different species so it’s not true hybrid vigor in a biological or agricultural sense. All of these dogs are the same species. If they share similar health problems then it’s likely that the puppies will inherit those problems, too.
People often choose to use Poodles to crossbreed dogs because they do not shed much, if at all, and they are good for people with allergies. Some Yorkie Poodle mix puppies may have a coat that doesn’t shed much but you should meet the individual puppies so you can see which ones have a coat that is more like a Poodle coat.
In terms of temperament the Yorkie-Poo can make a very nice pet. Both the Yorkie and the Poodle are outgoing breeds. The Yorkie tends to be quite feisty at times and is a confident dog. Poodles are also confident and one of the most intelligent of all dogs. Your Yorkie Poodle mix dog could be more like the Yorkie parent in temperament or more like the Poodle parent, but chances are that he will be quite smart and he should be outgoing, especially at home. With good socialization he should also be friendly and outgoing with strangers. Poodles love to show off and be the center of attention. If your Yorkie-Poo has good socialization he can also show off tricks he learns and be the center of attention wherever he goes.
Appearance and Grooming
As Yorkshire Terriers and Poodles (both Toy and Miniature) are both quite small breeds, your Yorkie-Poo will likely be a small dog. Yorkies have long, silky hair that needs to be brushed daily. Poodles have curly coat that doesn’t shed. Many owners take them to a professional groomer and keep their coat clipped short. There are various clips you can choose but most people use a simple all-over pet clip. A Yorkie-Poo may have coat that resembles either parent or which is something in the middle. It can be wavy, curly, or straight. Depending on the type of coat you may choose to keep it clipped or simply brush it out. The coat can be many different colors, just as Poodle coats can be many different colors. The dog’s nose is usually black and the eyes are dark. The ears can stand up, like the Yorkshire Terrier’s ears, or lie down, like the Poodle’s ears.
The Yorkie Poodle mix is a very popular little hybrid dog. They can make good pets. If you are interested in getting a Yorkie-Poo you should talk to the breeder and ask about the health of the parents. Ask if the breeder has had any health tests done and ask to see the results. Hybrid dogs are not necessarily healthier than purebred dogs. Only health testing the parents helps produce healthier puppies.
